ZETDC guarantees 150 MW for winter wheat farming

Published: 11 June 2025
In a strategic move to strengthen Zimbabwe's agricultural resilience, the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) has ring-fenced 150 megawatts (MW) of electricity exclusively for winter wheat production this season.

This targeted power allocation comes at a crucial time as farmers nationwide intensify planting and irrigation activities to meet the winter wheat production target of 600,000 tonnes.

"ZETDC is ensuring support of the winter wheat season by ring-fencing 150 MW of electricity for wheat farming, recognising electricity as a crucial input for winter wheat production," the utility company stated on its official X (formerly Twitter) account.

Reliable electricity supply is vital during the peak farming cycle, especially for powering irrigation pumps and mechanised farming equipment essential for optimal crop growth. The ring-fenced power is expected to minimize disruptions and ensure continuous water delivery to fields during this critical period.

The Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) and the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development are working closely with ZETDC to guarantee that both water and electricity resources are sufficiently available throughout the season.

Agricultural stakeholders have welcomed the initiative, expressing optimism that the dedicated power supply will help boost wheat yields and contribute significantly to national food security goals.

Zimbabwe requires approximately 360,000 tonnes of wheat annually for local consumption, and this season's ambitious target of 600,000 tonnes aims to reduce dependence on imports.

As farmers activate their irrigation systems this winter, the guaranteed 150 MW of electricity stands as a key enabler in Zimbabwe's drive to increase domestic wheat production and meet growing food demand.
