The government has released part of the US$2.2 million needed to rehabilitate Chitungwiza's failing sewer system, beginning critical works on the Zengeza Outfall Sewer Line.

Harare Metropolitan Affairs and Devolution Minister Charles Tawengwa said the project aims to restore sanitation and protect thousands of residents from waterborne diseases.

Chitungwiza Municipality has commenced phased works to replace old concrete pipes with modern infrastructure, starting with 9.8 kilometres of the sewer line. Once complete, the upgrades will benefit around 40,000 households in Zengeza and St Mary's, improving public health and overall service delivery.

The project is part of the National Development Strategy 1 and falls under the government's devolution programme, reflecting a long-term commitment to modernising urban infrastructure.
