Zimbabwe fires coach Michael Nees

Published: 23 October 2025
The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has officially sacked German coach Michael Nees following a marathon meeting of the executive and technical committee, ending the German's troubled tenure with immediate effect.

Nees, appointed in July 2024 by the Normalisation Committee, leaves after a year marked by disappointing results and fan frustration, including a win-less World Cup qualifying campaign. Under his stewardship, the Warriors played 12 competitive matches, recording only two wins, six draws, and four defeats. The team scored just three goals and finished bottom of Group C behind South Africa, Nigeria, Benin, Rwanda, and Lesotho.

The decision, reportedly made after a meeting that lasted until late into the night, paves the way for a new coach to lead Zimbabwe at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. ZIFA is expected to announce Nees' replacement by early next week.

Nees' tenure drew criticism for his tactical approach and lack of ambition. He often described Zimbabwe's struggles as "a building process" and labelled AFCON qualification as "an overachievement," remarks that infuriated supporters and local coaches alike. Former CAPS United coach Lloyd Chitembwe publicly branded Nees "a clown" over player selection disputes.

During his time, the Warriors were predictable and timid, a stark contrast to their historical resilience. While Nees promised German-style discipline and a modern football philosophy, his methods yielded stagnation rather than progress.

ZIFA, in its statement, thanked Nees for his efforts but reiterated its commitment to strengthening technical development in line with its reform and restructuring agenda. Interim arrangements for the team are expected to be announced shortly, as the association braces for the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.

The focus now shifts to finding a successor capable of restoring belief and competitiveness to the national side ahead of AFCON 2025, as time remains a pressing factor.
