Boost for explosives production

Sable Chemical Industries is set to start production of ammonium nitrate solution for use in the production of explosives as the country seeks to boost the mining industry.

In an address during his tour of the sole ammonium nitrate producer on Wednesday, President Mnangagwa applauded the initiative saying it goes a long way in boosting the mining industry.

"I am informed that Sable Chemicals has plans to produce ammonium nitrate solution for use in the production of explosives for the mining industry. This is a welcome initiative especially in the view of the anticipated growth in the mining sector," he said.

President Mnangagwa said the move was a good example of linkages that Government is keen to see taking root as the economy take strides along the recovery path.

He said an explosive plant which he will officially open soon, will be set nearby the giant fertiliser making company.

"I will be coming very soon for the ground-breaking ceremony of the explosives company soon after elections, as I will still be President," he said.

He said Government had put in place measures to improve the railway network linking the company for easy transportation of raw material and finished fertilisers.

"Sable is benefiting and dependent on the rail network for transportation of raw material, ammonia gas, as well as finished fertilisers. My Government has put in place concrete measures for a more efficient, reliable and modern rail network," he said.

President Mnangagwa applauded the company's efforts to reinvigorate the production process by decommissioning the electrolysis plant which gobbled about 90 megawatts of electricity off the national grid annually.
