Standard Bank, Africa's largest bank with subsidiaries across 26 countries including Zimbabwe under the Stanbic Bank brand, has appointed David Hodnett as its new Group Chief Executive.

Hodnett, currently the Group Chief Risk Officer and head of Corporate Affairs, brings over 30 years of leadership experience and extensive institutional knowledge to his new role.

In a related move, Thabani Ndwandwe will succeed Hodnett as Group Chief Risk Officer and join the Group Leadership Council while retaining his responsibilities as Chief Risk Officer for the bank. Ndwandwe, who joined Standard Bank in 2004, has over two decades of experience managing risk portfolios across multiple jurisdictions.

Meanwhile, Lungisa Fuzile has been confirmed as Chief Executive for Africa regions and offshore operations.

These appointments come less than a month after Standard Bank announced that current Chief Executive Sim Tshabalala and Chief Financial Officer Arno Daehnke will retire at the end of 2027.

"These key appointments demonstrate the Group's significant depth of leadership succession pipeline," Tshabalala said. "David has extensive experience in South Africa's financial services sector and has demonstrated exceptional leadership capabilities. Since joining Standard Bank two decades ago, Thabani has shown exemplary leadership across the risk portfolio, while Lungisa has a proven record of accomplishment."

With a presence in over 20 Sub-Saharan African countries, four global centres, and two offshore hubs, the Johannesburg-based financial services giant continues to reinforce its leadership structure to ensure smooth transitions and sustained growth across the continent.
