Chiwenga urges empowerment of millennials

Acting President Dr Constantino Chiwenga has emphasised the Government's responsibility to design investment programmes that empower millennials while creating an environment where their talents can thrive.

Dr Chiwenga made the remarks on Saturday while addressing the Roman Catholic Millennials for Christ in Nyanga. He was joined by the Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Advocate Misheck Mugadza, and other Government officials.

The event, which attracted young Catholics from Borrowdale and Nyanga, is part of a broader initiative aimed at bringing millennials closer to God while focusing on a generation seen as carrying the promise and future of both the Church and the nation.

Dr Chiwenga described millennials - those born between 1981 and 1996 - as "children of transition" shaped by the digital revolution, economic reform, globalisation, and social transformation. He explored three key themes with the group: the identity of millennials, the challenges they face, and the hope offered through Christ.

"They are digital natives, with knowledge and information at their fingertips. This reality has sharpened their worldview and produced a dynamic generation, courageous, questioning and innovative," Dr Chiwenga said. He highlighted millennials' access to limitless knowledge, their ability to form communities across boundaries, and their passion for justice and advocacy, citing biblical teachings including Proverbs 18:15 and James 1:27.

Despite their strengths, Dr Chiwenga acknowledged the challenges facing millennials, including isolation in a hyper-connected world, frayed family structures, mental fatigue, cyberbullying, climate change, economic instability, and struggles for stable employment and financial security.

"Yet even in the face of these struggles, you are not without hope," he told the gathering, citing Romans 5:5 and Jeremiah 29:11. "God's love is poured into our hearts, assuring you of hope, a future, and divine guidance."

Dr Chiwenga stressed that the Government plays a role in supporting millennials through investments in education, health, and community programmes designed to nurture talent. "We want to empower you, equip you and create conditions where your God-given talents can flourish. As you stand at the threshold of adulthood, your faith must remain your compass," he said.

The Acting President concluded by urging young people to embrace their faith and leverage their abilities for the betterment of society, underscoring that hope, love, and strength remain unshakeable through Christ.
