MDC-T president Douglas Mwonzora has reportedly had a warrant of arrest issued against him for defaulting on child maintenance payments, accumulating arrears of US$2 500 over five months.
Efforts to clarify with the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) why Mwonzora has not been arrested — nearly two months after a Harare magistrate issued the warrant - were unsuccessful. National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi promised a response to Masvingo Mirror, but none was received before publication.
Mwonzora, when contacted, claimed he was unaware of the warrant, while confirming the civil matter.
"I haven't received the warrant of arrest you are talking about. I don't deserve any warrant. This is a sniff campaign," he said.
The court had instructed Mwonzora in February 2024 to pay US$500 monthly, plus school fees, for his 10-year-old son with Getrude Chuma. The current warrant covers unpaid maintenance from March to July 2025, although the total arrears have since risen to US$3 500, including August and September.
Chuma expressed frustration at Harare Central Police for failing to serve the warrant on Mwonzora for the third time. The case is recorded under number M389.
