Zimbabwe has produced more than 400 000 vehicle number plates since local manufacturing began four years ago, in what authorities describe as a major achievement in the country's import-substitution and industrialisation drive.
The development has also resulted in a sharp reduction in the official price of standard vehicle number plates, from US$500 to US$50, while plans are now underway to explore export opportunities.
The number plates are being produced by Transtech Solutions Private Limited through a project involving local institutions of higher learning under the Government's Heritage-Based Education 5.0 model.
University of Zimbabwe Vice Chancellor Paul Mapfumo said the manufacturing plant has evolved from a campus-based operation into a fully commercial venture supplying plates nationwide.
"We have done 400 000 plates for the country. And we are now the official supplier of number plates, and things are running well," Prof Mapfumo said.
He added that production is being carried out according to orders from the Central Vehicle Registry (CVR), with the initiative involving partnerships between several higher education institutions.
Authorities say the project represents a practical example of local innovation and industrial production aimed at reducing imports while creating new economic opportunities. Police have meanwhile intensified operations targeting vehicles moving without number plates as enforcement measures continue.
