INGWEBU Breweries plans to introduce a new product sometime this year in a bid to diversify its products and increase the market base.

In an interview yesterday, Ingwebu managing director Prince Ndlovu said the company would introduce a non-alcoholic sorghum product - mahewu - as part of its expansion strategy.

"We are working on introducing a new product to our customers as a way of diversifying our products," he said.

Ndlovu said the project was still at its planning stage and consultations were at an advanced stage.

A new plant would have to be set up.

"At the moment I cannot set a timeline as to when people can expect to find the product on the market because there is still a lot of work to be done before the product can get into the market,"  said Ndlovu.

"We are still doing some consultations so that when the project begins and the product is introduced to the market, it becomes a success," he said.

"This is a way of diversifying our products because in the past we have been concentrating on producing traditional beer."

The product, according to Ndlovu, would be marketed in other provinces such as Midlands, Matabeleland North and South.

Ingwebu Breweries has been operating for 100 years.
