The construction of the state-of-the-art Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa Law School at Midlands State University's new Kwekwe campus has been completed and will be officially commissioned today by President Mnangagwa.

The ceremony coincides with MSU's first-ever graduation ceremony to be held outside its Gweru main campus, marking a historic milestone for the institution which also has campuses in Zvishavane, Harare, Botswana and is incubating a university in Eswatini.

Built on land donated by Kwekwe City Council, the law school is named after President Mnangagwa, a lawyer by profession. It features modern facilities including a moot court, e-library, medical centre, student residences, staff accommodation, and over 110 rooms such as lecture theatres and administrative offices. The school will also house the Faculties of Agriculture and Natural Resources as well as the Built Environment.

Dr Gift Manyatera, MSU's Chancellor for Infrastructure and Campus Development, said the project has been completed in record time.

"The construction of the campus is done, it's now at 100 percent and we are excited to be hosting our Chancellor President Mnangagwa who is going to commission the campus as well as presiding over the graduation ceremony," he said.

The development has already transformed the surrounding area, with significant infrastructure upgrades including the grading of the Kwekwe-Silobela road, paving of car parks, installation of a 500kVA transformer by ZETDC, and landscaping works around the campus.

Midlands Provincial Affairs Minister Owen Ncube hailed the project as a reflection of the Second Republic's commitment to education infrastructure under the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1).

"This law school is part of the broader effort to modernise and industrialise Zimbabwe through improved education facilities," he said.

The initiative has generated excitement within the Kwekwe community, which anticipates economic growth through increased demand for accommodation, shopping malls, and other amenities.

Kwekwe Town Clerk Dr Lucia Mnkandla said the city is set to benefit from the presence of the new campus.

"By donating land for the MSU law school, we anticipate a boost to the local economy through new businesses and increased revenue for the city council," she said.

Local real estate agents are predicting a housing boom, while residents see the project as a catalyst for long-term growth.

"Our city is on a massive growth trajectory. The project has put our city on the map," said Ms Amanda Runesu, a Kwekwe resident.

For parents, the milestone is equally significant. One parent noted that the decentralisation of the law programme from the University of Zimbabwe to MSU has given the Midlands province a new sense of pride.

Today's commissioning is expected to draw thousands of guests, parents, students, and dignitaries for what is being described as one of the most important events in Kwekwe's recent history.
