Fixed telephone operator TelOne, has launched a high speed Internet connection known as Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) Broadband in Masvingo. The new package is targeted at home users and offices with landlines.

In an interview on the sidelines of the official launch held at a local hotel last week, TelOne head of marketing and public relations Mr Isheunesu Mugadza said they introduced the product due to the rising demand in the use of internet services which were fast and user-friendly.

"Internet services are no longer a luxury but a need in the era we live. We have to move with time by providing products that people want in their business and even education," he said.

He said TelOne had realised the significance of coming up with new products for development of the nation.

"We are only responding to the market demand and filling developmental gaps in the multimedia and telecommunication area. Improved communication will develop the nation and that is our main thrust as TelOne. Internet is no longer a luxury but a basic need at every entry point," he said.

Mr Mugadza said ADSL was available in four packages.

"We have a basic package from which a subscriber can download a total of 10 Gigabytes. One can download 256 kilobytes per second in the comfort of your home or office. This package only costs $27 per month," he said.

The other packages are silver, gold and platinum.

The silver has a speed of 512 kilobytes per second and a total of 15G downloads per month while Gold has 20G and costs $110 per month.

One can download one megabyte per second. Platinum has unlimited downloads per month and its speed is two megabytes per second.

"TelOne ADSL is available in selected areas but plans are afoot to extend the coverage. The advantage is that on ADSL we are riding on our existing copper wire line infrastructure," he said.

He also said the company had a phase 2 rollout plan on which they will ride on optic fibre.

The new product has been launched in most major urban centres and the company was considering going to growth points and business centres in rural areas, he said.
