The Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (Zupco) has acquired 51 buses valued at $4,3 million as part of the organisation's three year strategy aimed at improving operations and maximising shareholder value.

The new fleet comprises 40 convectional and 11 luxury buses set to service inter-urban and rural routes.

Zupco division Operations Manager for the Southern Region Clifford Muwoni said the acquisition of the additional fleet will improve the company's operations.

"We received 51 buses yesterday (Sunday) out of 100 that we intend to buy this year and we are expecting the next batch in the next few weeks," Mr Chawasarira said in an interview yesterday.

Zupco is running a three-year strategic programme which aims to recapitalise the company at a rate of 100 buses every year.

The plan began in 2011.

"As we go, we are aiming to grow the momentum towards recapitalisation and we are targeting a fleet of 1 000 buses by 2017," he said.

He said that the buses will be servicing inter-city and cross-border routes.

Mr Muwoni also appealed to rural district councils across the country to upgrade roads in order to improve accessibility.
