Econet tells disgruntled banks to 'Invest in your own EcoCash'
Published: 17 September 2013
Econet Wireless Zimbabwe Chie Executive Officer Douglas Mboweni has told banks that reluctant join EcoCash for their mobile money transfer services to invest in their own network instead of lobbying to use the Econet gateway to promote their own products.

Mboweni said some of the banking sector players have come to Econet saying they want to use its gateway to launch their own mobile money transfer services, outside of EcoCash, something that is unacceptable to them.

"If people want another gateway they are quite free to go and invest in equipment that brings them that other gateway," he added.

Mboweni mentioned that they have fully utilised their infrastructure and have constructed a gateway they believe will be efficient to connect everybody and they allow banks to transact using EcoCash and even launch their own services as long as they recognize that EcoCash is the gateway.

He added that EcoCash has become an effective tool that the business is now using to retain its customers.

"We're all aware that the trend in the mobile telecommunications at the moment is that there is a lot of movement that can happen amongst subscribers... The major motivation around EcoCash is to encourage Econet subscribers to keep their sim-card in their phones," he said.
