TELONE have embarked on a reforestation journey targeting 56 000 trees by December this year.
Addressing delegates at Nyamhunga Township where TelOne handed over 100 bins to Kariba Municipality, TelOne managing director Chipo Mutasa said the organisation is on a corporate social investing theme dubbed, 'Connecting people, Building Communities.
"Today we have come to Kariba with a humble donation of 100 litter bins which we believe will help support the anti-littering drive by the local authority," she said.
"We consider the seriousness which the municipality here has shown towards this cause and we are confident that this drive will enhance the aesthetic of Kariba as a tourist destination.
"As TelOne, we are happy to share our sustainability story through this programme, where we are recycling oil drums and poles recovered from our operations sites to make the bins.
"As we launch the Kariba phase of this programme, we are happy to advise that as part of the donation, the bins will be installed using TelOne resources, of course with the guidance of the Municipality.
"Furthermore, we have also come to unveil our tree planting programme, which again is part of that drive to be a sustainable operation which cares about this impact on society.
"We have realized that through our operation, we cause damage to the environment through trenching as well as harvesting gum poles and have therefore embarked on a reforestation journey.
"Under this programme, we are targeting to plant 56 000 trees by December at a cost of US$25 000 AND 100 000 BY 2018," said Mutasa.
Mutasa ranked Kariba as number one in cleanliness after leading her team in cleaning the town.
In her speech after receiving the donation, Kariba mayor, Tracey Ndoro said the environment is the most prized resource that Africa has and Kariba is leading the introduction of community projects which ensure communities benefit from waste.
"It is my pleasure in having stakeholders like TelOne considering our beautiful town Kariba for providing bins and planting trees.
"Municipality of Kariba, through the Integrated Solid Waste Management, is leading the introduction of community projects which ensure the community benefit from waste.
"These projects include composting of waste, recycling, making cobra out of waste, fabricating iron sheet products and more," said Ndoro.
